On Call Review: A Gripping, Compact Take on Police Procedurals

    On Call

On Call, the latest offering from creators Tim Walsh and Elliot Wolf, delivers an engaging and refreshing perspective on police procedural dramas. With its half-hour format and fast-paced storytelling, this Prime Video series redefines the genre while retaining the emotional depth and tension expected from a Dick Wolf production.

    Plot and Premise

The series centers around veteran Long Beach Police Department training officer Traci Harmon (Troian Bellisario) and her rookie partner Alex Diaz (Brandon Larracuente). Together, they tackle the unpredictable emergencies on the streets of Long Beach, California, all while dealing with the emotional aftermath of losing a fellow officer.

The compact runtime of 24 minutes per episode is a bold departure from the traditional hour-long procedural, but On Call makes the most of it. Each episode feels like a tightly wound spring, packing intense action, character-driven drama, and poignant moments into a short time frame.

    Performances

Troian Bellisario shines as Officer Traci Harmon, bringing a nuanced performance that blends authority, vulnerability, and determination. Her dynamic with Brandon Larracuente’s Alex Diaz, a rookie grappling with the realities of the job, adds depth to the narrative. Their mentor-mentee relationship evolves organically, offering both tense confrontations and heartfelt camaraderie.

The supporting cast is equally strong. Eriq LaSalle as the no-nonsense Sergeant Lasman and Lori Loughlin as the pragmatic Lieutenant Bishop provide a solid backbone to the series. Rich Ting’s Detective Sergeant Tyson Koyama brings a sharp edge to the show, hinting at untold layers in his character.

    What Sets It Apart

Unlike traditional police dramas, On Call focuses on the immediacy of each call, presenting raw, real-time action. The condensed episodes leave little room for filler, creating a high-stakes atmosphere that keeps viewers hooked. The show also delves into the emotional toll of police work, offering a balanced mix of action and introspection.

The setting of Long Beach, with its diverse and vibrant community, adds authenticity and variety to the stories. The show doesn’t shy away from addressing complex social issues, giving it a grounded and relevant feel.

    Verdict: A Refreshing Procedural Drama

On Call is a standout in the crowded field of police procedurals. Its unique half-hour format, strong performances, and compelling storytelling make it a must-watch for fans of the genre. By blending action, emotion, and authenticity, the series offers a fresh take on the challenges faced by law enforcement officers.

With its brisk pacing and engaging characters, On Call proves that sometimes less is more. It’s a compact yet powerful series that packs an emotional punch, leaving viewers eager for more with each episode.
