Now Ola-Uber Will Not Use Vehicles Older Than 8 Years – New Rule to Be Enforced Nationwide

Now Ola-Uber Will Not Use Vehicles Older Than 8 Years – New Rule to Be Enforced Nationwide

The government has taken a major decision regarding ride-hailing services like Ola and Uber. Taxis operating through these apps will now only be allowed to run for a maximum of 8 years from the date of registration. After that, even if the vehicle is in good condition, it will be considered retired from commercial use. This rule will be implemented nationwide and is expected to impact thousands of drivers and millions of commuters. Let’s look at the details.

What Are the Benefits for Passengers?

Safer and Cleaner Rides: Older taxis often lack basic safety features like airbags and ABS. This rule will ensure that passengers get newer, safer, and more comfortable vehicles.

Lower Pollution: Older taxis emit more smoke and pollutants. Limiting commercial vehicles to 8 years will help reduce air pollution on roads.

    The Struggles Drivers Might Face

Many drivers have purchased their vehicles through loans and are still paying EMIs. Being forced to stop using the vehicle after 8 years could create financial stress. Rising fuel prices, app commissions, and increasing competition are already affecting their income. Without any government support, many drivers may be forced to quit their taxi service.

What Will Happen to Old Taxis?

According to data from Ola and Uber, around 20% of their taxis are over 8 years old. These vehicles will either need to be replaced or used only for personal purposes. They could be sold in smaller towns as private cars, which could boost the second-hand car market.

    What Could Be the Solution?

Automobile industry associations have urged the government to offer relaxations, scrappage incentives, and easy loan schemes. Fleet management companies could also step in by offering drivers new vehicles on lease or rent. This would reduce the burden on drivers and bring newer, tech-enabled taxis into service.

    Will This Boost EV Adoption?

Absolutely. If drivers are required to purchase new vehicles, electric taxis could become a cost-effective and future-ready option. Many states already offer subsidies and tax benefits on EVs. Ola and Uber have already started testing electric vehicles in select cities.

Relief for Passengers, Pressure on Drivers

This new rule is likely to benefit passengers by providing cleaner, safer, and newer taxis. However, without proper support from the government or ride-hailing companies, it could be a major challenge for drivers. At the same time, it opens up big opportunities for EVs and fleet management companies to make the transition smoother and more efficient.
