Is Someone Else's Number Linked to Your Aadhaar? You Could Face Legal Action

In 2025, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) introduced stricter rules for purchasing new SIM cards to reduce fraud cases and enhance user security. Under the new rules, it is mandatory to link an Aadhaar card for obtaining a new SIM. Users can also check how many numbers are linked to their Aadhaar. To tackle the rising cases of fraud and fake calls, the telecom department has tightened SIM card purchase regulations and initiated the process of deactivating fraudulent numbers.

However, if someone has linked a number to your Aadhaar without your knowledge, it can be very dangerous. This not only compromises your privacy but could also lead to legal consequences. You may be held responsible for any activities carried out using the number linked to your Aadhaar. Therefore, it is crucial to know how many SIM cards have been issued with your Aadhaar and ensure you are aware of this information. Here’s how you can check and what to do if you find discrepancies:

Why Checking is Important: In today’s digital era, cyber fraud has increased significantly. Many people unknowingly share their Aadhaar details, which can be misused by malicious individuals. It is important to know how many SIM cards have been issued under your Aadhaar because if a number registered to your Aadhaar is involved in criminal activities, you may face legal consequences. This could even lead to jail time.

    What to Do:

    • Visit the official website: https://www.sancharsaathi.gov.in/.
    • Go to the “Citizen-Centered Services” section and click on the “Citizen-Centered Services” option.
    • Choose the “TAFCOP” option and proceed.
    • Enter your mobile number, CAPTCHA, and OTP.
    • After verification, you will see a list of numbers linked to your Aadhaar.
    • If you spot a number that you did not register, select it and click on “Not My Number” to block it.

By using the Sancharsaathi portal, you can protect yourself from identity theft, avoid unnecessary legal issues, and contribute to a safer ecosystem. Stay vigilant, regularly check the activity of your SIM, and report any irregularities. This way, you can safeguard yourself from cyber fraud.
