The future of Asia Cup 2025 had been uncertain for a while, but now the Indian government has clarified its stance on playing cricket matches against Pakistan. The Asia Cup is not an ICC tournament; it is conducted under the Asian Cricket Council (ACC). After the Pahalgam terror attack and Operation Sindoor, the relationship between India and Pakistan had deteriorated significantly. Amid this situation, there were speculations that the highly anticipated India vs Pakistan match in the Asia Cup might not happen.
When questions arose about India facing Pakistan in the Asia Cup, the BCCI stated that Team India would need approval from the Indian government to play against Pakistan. In Parliament, India’s Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya made it clear that India will continue to participate in international tournaments involving Pakistan. He also mentioned that the National Sports Governance Bill will soon be introduced.

Mandaviya said, “Our stance is clear. Whether it is cricket, hockey, or any other sport, we have no problem playing against Pakistan in international tournaments. But when it comes to bilateral series, I think the government’s position is well known.”
According to reports, the Asia Cup 2025 was initially planned to be played between 8 teams. However, only 6 teams may participate. Oman and Hong Kong had qualified for the tournament, but due to scheduling and logistical challenges, they might not be able to take part. As per sources, the Asia Cup 2025 is set to begin on September 5, with the final scheduled for September 21.
