Ikka Release Date on Netflix: Sunny Deol and Akshaye Khanna Reunite for a Courtroom Drama

Directed by Siddharth P. Malhotra, this Netflix original brings two Border co-stars back together as lawyer and accused in a story about justice, family, and impossible choices

Ikka Release Date on Netflix - Sunny Deol and Akshaye Khanna Reunite for a Courtroom Drama

Some on-screen reunions feel inevitable. This one has been nearly three decades in the making. Sunny Deol and Akshaye Khanna last shared the screen together in 1997’s Border, a film that remains etched in Hindi cinema’s collective memory.

Now, with Ikka premiering on Netflix on July 10, the two are back — this time not as soldiers, but as a lawyer and the man he’s forced to defend. Netflix India has just released the trailer, and it’s already generating exactly the kind of buzz you’d expect from a reunion of this scale.

    What Ikka Is About

At the centre of the story is Arjun Mehra, played by Sunny Deol — a lawyer so respected for his unwavering principles that he’s earned the nickname “Ikka” within the legal community.

Arjun’s entire career has been built on a simple belief: that justice matters more than simply winning. That conviction is tested in the most personal way possible when he’s compelled to defend Shauryamann Gaur, played by Akshaye Khanna, a man accused in a high-profile attempted murder case. To make things more complicated, Arjun had previously prosecuted Shauryamann himself.

As the trial unfolds, the case stops being purely professional. It begins seeping into Arjun’s personal life, forcing him to question his ethics, his relationships, and everything he has spent his career building.

One of the trailer’s standout lines captures the film’s core idea perfectly. Arjun says, “Hum court mein jeetne ke liye nahi, haq ke liye ladte hai” — we don’t fight in court to win, we fight for what is right. It’s a simple statement, but it sets up exactly the kind of moral conflict the film seems built around.

Ikka on Netflix - Everything to Know About Sunny Deol and Akshaye Khanna's Courtroom Drama

The Cast Bringing the Story to Life

Alongside Sunny Deol and Akshaye Khanna, Ikka features a genuinely strong ensemble.

Tillotama Shome plays public prosecutor Madhura Banerjee, the woman who goes head-to-head with Arjun in court. Speaking about the role, Shome described Madhura as someone with deep integrity and quiet determination — “a strong woman who isn’t afraid to stand her ground or take on the toughest challenges, even when the pressure is immense.”

Dia Mirza plays Avantika, Arjun’s wife, who finds herself trying to hold her family together as the case begins to unravel things at home. Mirza spoke about being drawn to Avantika’s resilience, describing her as someone who “brings warmth, strength, and stability to those around her, even when life becomes increasingly uncertain.”

The cast also includes Sanjeeda Shaikh as Shauryamann’s wife, Shishir Sharma as his father Harshvardhan Gaur, and Akansha Ranjan Kapoor in a supporting role, rounding out a cast built to carry both the courtroom tension and the emotional weight of the story.

    Why This Reunion Matters

For longtime fans of Hindi cinema, the Deol-Khanna reunion is the emotional hook that makes Ikka feel special before a single courtroom scene plays out.

Border (1997) remains one of the most beloved war dramas in Bollywood history, and seeing these two actors return to the screen together — nearly thirty years later, in completely different roles — carries a weight that newer pairings simply can’t replicate.

Akshaye Khanna, who skipped the trailer launch, shared a voice message for fans instead, playfully hinting at the long gap between their on-screen appearances: “Kuch mulaqatein stage par nahi ho sakti. Agar ho gayi, to zalzalaa aa sakta hai!” — some meetings can’t happen on stage, because if they did, they might create an earthquake. He added that audiences would now meet him and Ikka only on Netflix, on July 10.

A Career Milestone for Sunny Deol

Ikka also marks a genuinely significant moment in Sunny Deol’s career — it’s his first project made exclusively for a streaming platform.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Deol explained what drew him to the role: “Arjun is a man who believes in doing what is right, but circumstances push him to question everything around him. His pain, his anger, his silence, and his fight for what he believes in are what drew me to this character.”

That description fits neatly with where Deol’s career has been heading recently — roles that lean into emotional and moral complexity rather than pure action.

Meet the Crew Behind the Camera

Ikka is directed by Siddharth P. Malhotra, who also produces the film alongside Sapna Malhotra under their banner Alchemy Films. The screenplay comes from Althea Kaushal and Mayank Tewari.

    When and Where to Watch

Ikka premieres exclusively on Netflix on July 10, 2026. With a story built around justice and personal sacrifice, a cast stacked with serious acting talent, and a reunion three decades in the making, Ikka has positioned itself as one of the more anticipated Indian streaming releases of the year. Whether it lives up to the weight of that reunion is something audiences will find out very soon.
