Dark Matter Season 2 Review: A Slow-Burn Multiverse Story That Tests Patience

Joel Edgerton and Jennifer Connelly deliver strong performances in this character-driven second season, but the show's shift toward emotional drama comes at the cost of its sci-fi thrills.

Dark Matter Season 2 Review - A Slow-Burn Multiverse Story That Tests Patience

    Dark Matter Season 2 Review: ★★★☆☆ (3/5)

Dark Matter Season 2 trades much of its multiverse mystery and thrills for a slower, more emotionally driven story about identity and relationships. The performances remain strong, but the pacing tests patience, and the finale leaves more questions than answers.

    Rating: ★★★☆☆ (3/5)
    Platform: Apple TV+
    Genre: Science Fiction, Drama
    Episodes: 10
Cast: Joel Edgerton, Jennifer Connelly, Alice Braga, Jimmi Simpson

Two years after its first season left viewers stunned, Dark Matter returns with a second chapter that takes its multiverse concept in a noticeably different direction.

Based on Blake Crouch’s novel and now moving beyond the source material entirely, the new season follows Jason and Daniela as they try to build a quiet life in a new universe, alongside several other familiar faces from across the multiverse dealing with their own struggles.

The biggest shift this season is tonal. Rather than leaning into mystery and suspense, Dark Matter spends much of its expanded runtime focused on emotional drama.

Jason and Daniela uproot their family once again after someone threatens their fragile peace, while Amanda and Ryan search for a way back to their own world, and the increasingly unsettling Leighton continues chasing his own twisted vision of a perfect reality using the Box.

Dark Matter Season 2 Review - More Feelings, Fewer Fireworks

All of these threads weave in and out of the season, but the show spends an unusual amount of time simply sitting with its characters’ fears, anxieties, and personal relationships rather than pushing the central mystery forward.

In small doses, that emotional focus works well. Watching Jason and Daniela navigate genuine marital tension, stripped almost entirely of technology in a version of Chicago that feels frozen somewhere in the 1980s or 90s, gives the show room to explore real, grounded questions about identity and change.

Can people really become different simply because their surroundings changed? How much of who we are depends on the choices we make versus the person we already are underneath. When Dark Matter leans into these ideas, it becomes something closer to a thoughtful adult drama than a typical sci-fi thriller, and that shift is more successful than it might sound.

The problem is that this approach comes at a real cost. Leighton’s storyline, despite plenty of setup around his genius-level intellect and corrupted ideology, never quite builds to any real payoff, staying oddly stuck in the middle for most of the season.

Amanda’s and Ryan’s arc suffers a similar fate, starting with real promise before eventually fizzling out without much resolution.

For a show built around an endlessly fascinating piece of technology capable of unlocking infinite realities, it is more than a little surprising how much of the season is spent simply talking through feelings in a handful of locations rather than actually exploring the multiverse’s full potential.

That said, the multiverse concept itself remains genuinely compelling whenever the show does engage with it. Watching different versions of the same characters, especially multiple Jasons, navigate similar situations in wildly different ways continues to be one of the most interesting aspects of the series, showing just how much circumstance can shape a person while still being fundamentally the same at their core.

Joel Edgerton and Jennifer Connelly continue to deliver excellent performances throughout, tasked with portraying countless emotional variations of essentially the same two people, and their work goes a long way toward making up for the season’s lighter focus on genuine sci-fi exploration.

Unfortunately, the season’s finale does not fully deliver the payoff many viewers will likely be hoping for. Rather than picking up momentum and answering lingering questions, it leaves things intentionally open-ended, setting the stage for a likely third season rather than providing real closure.

It is an intriguing ending with a few genuine moments, but it lands more as a mild shock than the mind-bending finish fans of the first season might expect.

In the end, Dark Matter Season 2 is a heavily character-driven season that occasionally loses sight of its own science fiction identity. The performances remain a highlight, and its exploration of identity and relationships is thoughtful and effective in isolated moments, but the overall pacing and lack of real narrative momentum make this a season that tests patience more often than it rewards it.
