Apple Introduces New AirTag: Should You Upgrade from AirTag to AirTag 2?

Apple officially introduced the second-generation AirTag on January 26, 2026, marking its first major update since the original model launched in 2021. The new AirTag focuses on smarter tracking, better range, and louder alerts while keeping the same familiar design.

The AirTag 2 is now available for preorder at $29 for a single unit or $99 for a four-pack. Apple has kept the compact size and replaceable battery, which still lasts over a year in normal usage.

What Is New in AirTag 2

The biggest upgrade in AirTag 2 is the second-generation Ultra Wideband chip, similar to the one used in newer iPhones. This allows Precision Finding to work up to 50 percent farther, extending the range to nearly 60 meters or around 200 feet.

This improvement makes finding misplaced items much easier, especially in large homes, parking areas, or crowded indoor spaces. For users who rely heavily on Precision Finding, this alone is a meaningful upgrade.

Louder Speaker and Better Bluetooth Range

Apple has also upgraded the built-in speaker in AirTag 2, making it around 50 percent louder than before. The new chime can be heard from almost twice the distance, which helps a lot in noisy environments.

In addition, the Bluetooth chip has been improved for better overall range. While Apple does not give exact numbers, real-world tracking should feel more reliable in everyday use.

Apple Watch Support for Precision Finding

One of the most practical upgrades is expanded Precision Finding support on newer Apple Watch models. AirTag 2 now works with Apple Watch Series 9 and newer, along with Apple Watch Ultra 2 and above.

This means you can locate items directly from your wrist without pulling out your iPhone. For Apple Watch users, this feature adds real convenience to daily tracking.

    Design, Battery Life, and Compatibility

Apple has kept the physical design of AirTag 2 unchanged, which is good news for existing users. All current accessories, keychains, and holders remain fully compatible with the new model.

Battery life also remains the same, offering more than one year of usage with a standard replaceable coin cell battery. While some users hoped for longer battery life, Apple has focused more on range and usability improvements.

    Availability and Pricing in India

AirTag 2 preorders began globally on January 26, with sales starting in India from January 30. In India, the single AirTag 2 is priced at around Rs 3,790, keeping it accessible within Apple’s ecosystem.

The new AirTag integrates seamlessly with the Find My app across iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, and iCloud. At launch, there is no confirmed support for Vision Pro.

    Security and Privacy Remain Strong

Apple continues to lead in privacy and safety with AirTag 2. Location data is never stored on the device and is protected using end-to-end encryption.

Anti-stalking features remain in place, including rotating Bluetooth identifiers and alerts for unknown AirTags moving with you. Apple clearly states that AirTags are designed for items only, not for tracking people or pets.

Should You Upgrade from AirTag to AirTag 2

For most users, upgrading from the original AirTag to AirTag 2 is not essential. If your current AirTags work well and you rarely face range or sound issues, the original model still performs reliably.

However, users who frequently lose items over longer distances or rely heavily on Precision Finding will benefit from the improved range and louder speaker. Apple Watch users will also appreciate the new wrist-based tracking support.

    When AirTag 2 Makes Sense

AirTag 2 is a smart upgrade if you often track items in large spaces like offices, parking lots, or travel locations. The 50 percent range increase can make a noticeable difference in such situations.

It is also worth upgrading if you often struggle to hear alerts or prefer using your Apple Watch instead of your phone. Since pricing remains unchanged, buying new AirTags now makes more sense than buying the older version.

When You Can Skip the Upgrade

If your original AirTags already meet your needs, there is no urgent reason to upgrade. Core features like battery life, privacy protection, and access to the Find My network remain unchanged.

For casual users, AirTag 2 feels more like a refinement than a revolution. In that case, it may be better to save money or consider AirTag 2 only when adding new trackers or gifting them.

    Final Verdict

AirTag 2 is a thoughtful and well-timed upgrade that improves what matters most: range, sound, and usability. Apple has refined the experience without changing what already works well.

If you are a power user or deeply invested in Apple’s ecosystem, AirTag 2 is a solid upgrade. For everyone else, the original AirTag remains a dependable and secure tracking solution.
