Anaconda (2025) Movie Review: When Dreams Meet Giant Snakes

The movie knows exactly what it is and doesn't pretend to be anything else. It pokes fun at Hollywood's obsession with remakes and sequels while being a remake itself. That self-awareness is refreshing.

Anaconda (2025) Movie Review: When Dreams Meet Giant Snakes

This Christmas, Hollywood just gave us something completely unexpected. Anaconda isn’t your typical monster movie reboot. It’s a comedy about two friends trying to remake the 1997 cult classic film, and what happens when their dreams crash into reality – quite literally.

    What’s This Movie Really About?

Doug and Griff have been best friends since childhood and always dreamed of remaking their favorite movie, the original Anaconda. Now in the middle of a midlife crisis, they decide it’s time to chase that dream. Doug is stuck making wedding videos while Griff struggles with his acting career. When Griff secures the rights to remake Anaconda, they gather their friends and head to the Amazon rainforest to shoot their passion project.

The twist? Things get serious when an actual giant anaconda shows up, turning their chaotic movie set into a deadly situation. What starts as a fun, low-budget film project becomes a real fight for survival.

    Meet the Cast

    Jack Black as Doug McCallister

Jack Black plays Doug, one of the two lead characters. Jack brings his trademark energy and humor to the role of a guy who’s tired of filming weddings and wants to create something meaningful. He’s the dreamer of the group, and watching him navigate between filmmaking chaos and actual danger is entertaining. Jack knows how to balance comedy with genuine emotion, making you care about whether Doug achieves his dream.

Paul Rudd as Ronald “Griff” Griffen Jr.

Paul Rudd plays Griff, Doug’s best friend since childhood. Paul has this natural charm that makes every character he plays likable. Griff is the one who makes this whole adventure happen by getting the movie rights. He’s recently been fired from a TV show and is desperate to prove himself. The chemistry between Paul and Jack is the heart of the movie – you genuinely believe they’ve been friends forever.

    Steve Zahn as Kenny Trent

Steve Zahn plays Kenny Trent, one of Doug and Griff’s friends. Kenny is the videographer who struggles with sobriety. Steve is known for playing quirky, memorable supporting characters, and he doesn’t disappoint here. Zahn himself admitted he messed up many takes because he couldn’t stop laughing at his co-stars, which tells you how fun this set must have been.

    Thandiwe Newton as Claire Simons

Thandiwe Newton plays Claire Simons, another member of the friend group. Claire is described as directionless, someone also searching for purpose in life. Thandiwe brings depth to what could have been a throwaway role. She’s a talented actor who’s been in everything from Mission Impossible to Westworld, and she adds emotional weight to the comedy.

    Daniela Melchior as Ana Almeida

Daniela Melchior plays Ana Almeida, the boat captain who guides the crew. Daniela became known after her role in The Suicide Squad, and here she gets to show her range in a different kind of adventure. Ana is the practical one who has to deal with these chaotic filmmakers invading her territory.

    Selton Mello as Santiago Braga

Selton Mello plays Santiago Braga, the snake handler. His character is essential to the plot since they need snakes for their movie. Selton brings an eccentric energy to the role that adds to the film’s unpredictable nature.

    Special Appearance

Ice Cube, who appeared in the original 1997 Anaconda film, makes a cameo appearance as himself. This is a nice touch that connects the new movie to the original while acknowledging its legacy.

    The Good Parts

The movie knows exactly what it is and doesn’t pretend to be anything else. It pokes fun at Hollywood’s obsession with remakes and sequels while being a remake itself. That self-awareness is refreshing.

Jack Black and Paul Rudd are perfect together. Their friendship feels real, and you root for them even when they’re making terrible decisions. The supporting cast adds flavor without stealing the spotlight.

There are genuine laughs here. The comedy comes from the characters and situations rather than forced jokes. When things go wrong on their film set, it’s funny because we’ve all had projects that spiraled out of control.

    Where It Falls Short

The movie struggles with pacing in the middle. Once they get to the jungle, there’s a rushed feeling to how quickly things escalate. Some scenes feel like they’re checking boxes rather than building naturally.

Critics noted the film has big snake action but puts in low effort in its execution. The special effects are fine but nothing groundbreaking. You can tell the budget went more toward the cast than the production value.

The ending wraps up a bit too neatly. After all the chaos, everything resolves quickly without much consequence, which feels unrealistic even for a comedy.

    Who Should Watch This?

This is perfect for a casual movie night when you want something light and funny. If you loved the original Anaconda or enjoy movies that make fun of Hollywood, you’ll appreciate the humor.

Fans of Jack Black and Paul Rudd will have a great time. Their comedic timing is on point, and they clearly had fun making this.

However, if you’re looking for genuine scares or a serious monster movie, this isn’t it. The horror elements are played mostly for laughs. Also, if you hate meta-humor or movies about making movies, this might annoy you.

    Final Thoughts

Anaconda (2025) is a fun ride that celebrates friendship, chasing dreams, and the absurdity of Hollywood. The film was released on December 25, 2025, giving audiences a light comedy option during the holiday season.

It’s not trying to be a masterpiece. Instead, it takes a ridiculous premise and runs with it, giving us laughs along the way. The cast clearly enjoyed themselves, and that energy translates to the screen.

The movie reminds us that sometimes chasing your dreams can be messy, dangerous, and completely worth it – even if a giant snake tries to eat you in the process.

Rating: 2.5 out of 5 stars

Worth watching for the cast chemistry and laughs, but don’t expect it to revolutionize comedy or horror. It’s exactly what it promises to be – nothing more, nothing less.
