Akhanda 2 Movie Review: When Bigger Doesn’t Always Mean Better

For hardcore Balakrishna fans, you'll probably enjoy seeing your hero in full form.

    Akhanda 2 Movie Review

I’ve been following Balakrishna’s films for years, and like many fans, I had high hopes after the first Akhanda became such a massive hit back in 2021. Now that the sequel is finally here, I have mixed feelings about what director Boyapati Sreenu has delivered.

Let me start with what works. The scale is absolutely huge. They shot this across the Himalayas, Georgia, and even at the Kumbh Mela, and you can see where the money went on screen. The visuals are impressive, especially in 3D. Thaman’s music, particularly “The Thaandavam” track, has that powerful energy that gets you pumped up. And Balakrishna, as always, gives it his all in the dual role.

But here’s where things get tricky for me. The film leans so heavily into the fantasy and divine elements that it sometimes feels over the top. I love action movies, but there’s a fine line between heroic and unbelievable. Some scenes made me scratch my head rather than cheer. The teaser itself divided fans online, and I can see why people had strong reactions both ways.

Samyuktha Menon does what she can with her role, though I wish the female characters had more depth. Aadhi Pinisetty as the villain brings intensity, which helps balance things out. The addition of Harshaali Malhotra is interesting, though her character Janani could have been developed better.

My biggest issue is the story. Sequels need to justify their existence, and while Akhanda 2 tries to go bigger, it doesn’t necessarily go deeper. The first film had a certain raw power and simplicity that worked. This one throws everything at the screen, hoping something sticks.

For hardcore Balakrishna fans, you’ll probably enjoy seeing your hero in full form. The action sequences are loud and energetic. But if you’re looking for the magic that made the original special, you might leave the theater feeling like something’s missing.

It’s not a bad film by any means. It’s just that when you follow up a blockbuster, expectations are sky-high, and Akhanda 2 delivers spectacle without quite capturing the soul of what made us love the first one.

Rating: 3/5 – Worth watching if you’re a fan, but don’t expect lightning to strike twice.
