Adarsh Baal Vidyalaya Review: Kay Kay Menon Leads a Warm, Funny and Timely Look at India’s Government Schools

Kay Kay Menon is wonderfully understated, the ensemble is terrific, and the social commentary lands without preaching — if only the mid-season momentum held as well as the opening episodes.

Adarsh Baal Vidyalaya Review - Kay Kay Menon Leads a Warm, Funny and Timely Look at Indias Government Schools

Adarsh Baal Vidyalaya Review: ★★★☆☆ (3/5)

Adarsh Baal Vidyalaya is a warm, humorous, and genuinely timely series that uses a crumbling government school in fictional Tinki Toli as a mirror for everything that is broken — and occasionally beautiful — about India’s public education system, anchored by a relaxed and charming Kay Kay Menon performance that reminds you how good he is when a role lets him breathe.

The series loses some steam in the middle episodes as the Cambridge trip motivation starts to feel stretched, but the ensemble cast, the sharp writing, and the show’s refusal to be preachy about serious issues keep it consistently watchable throughout its seven episodes.

    Rating: ★★★☆☆ (3/5)
    Director: Himank Gaur
    Platform: Amazon Prime Video
    Episodes: 7
Cast: Kay Kay Menon, Naveen Kasturia, Abhimanyu Singh, Prasanna Bisht, Archana Puran Singh
    Release: July 24, 2026

If you have watched Panchayat, Gram Chikitsalay, or Kota Factory and found yourself nodding at the specific texture of how underfunded Indian institutions actually work — the bureaucratic indifference, the workarounds people develop out of necessity, the moments of real human connection that somehow survive all of it — then Adarsh Baal Vidyalaya will feel immediately familiar.

That is not a criticism. It is a genre that Indian streaming has developed a genuine gift for, and this series belongs in good company.

The school in question is Adarsh Baal Vidyalaya, located in the fictional town of Tinki Toli on the outskirts of Delhi. Adarsh in name only — the building is crumbling, neighbours dry their clothes on the campus gates, and the local MLA has essentially converted the premises into his personal event venue whenever it suits him.

Principal Gyaneshwar Tripathi, played by Kay Kay Menon, is perfectly comfortable playing cricket with his students rather than running the institution, until an incentive arrives that suddenly makes him very interested in results: the principal of whichever government school tops Delhi’s board exams gets an all-expenses-paid trip to Cambridge, spouse included.

Adarsh Baal Vidyalaya Review - A Government School Drama That Gets More Right Than Wrong

The motivation is not idealism. It is love — Gyaneshwar wants to give his long-suffering wife Sushma, played by Prachee Shah, something she deserves after years of standing quietly beside a man who never quite lived up to his potential. That emotional thread gives the show a genuine human core without ever becoming melodramatic.

Kay Kay Menon is a revelation in a role that asks him to be absent-minded, sardonic, warmhearted, and occasionally bumbling — very different from the intense, serious roles he is usually associated with. He makes Gyaneshwar completely believable and completely likeable.

Prasanna Bisht as the new math teacher forced to also teach physics is bright and natural. Naveen Kasturia, as the school counsellor who cannot communicate with his own teenage daughter, brings the same warmth and timing that makes him such a reliable screen presence.

Abhimanyu Singh as the rule-obsessed Hindi teacher with a secret side hustle gets some of the funniest material. Deven Bhojani as the casually corrupt MLA is a delight. Archana Puran Singh, in a more restrained role than audiences might expect from her, is a genuine surprise.

The writing deserves real credit for how it handles serious issues — sex education, child marriage, institutional bias against girls, students being exploited for labour — without ever becoming a lecture. The biology teacher song about menstruation is both genuinely funny and genuinely pointed. That balance is harder to achieve than it looks.

The middle episodes do sag. The Cambridge trip framework starts to feel thin when the show asks it to carry too many separate storylines. A tighter edit across some of those episodes would have helped considerably.

But the spirit of the show never wavers, and Kay Kay Menon makes every episode worth watching.

Adarsh Baal Vidyalaya is now streaming on Amazon Prime Video. All 7 episodes available.
