Shakuntalam Movie Story: Kalidasa’s play Abhijnanasakuntalam is considered a masterpiece of global literature. It’s a fantastic love story about the wonderfully beautiful Shakuntala and the powerful monarch Dushyanta. This movie an adaptation of that play. Shakuntalam and Dushyanta are the play’s protagonist. Dushyanta exhibits nearly all of the characteristics of a brave and noble-minded hero while Shakuntalam exhibits the characteristics of a true lover. Shakuntala, the daughter of wizard Vishwamitra and nymph Meneka, meets King Dushyant and falls in love with him. They have a kid, but owing to a sage’s curse, Dushyant forgets all about Shakuntala until fate brings them together again.

Shakuntalam Movie Review

Love prevails over everything. It is the binding force that brings the world closer and the movie Shakuntalam again proves this point with finesse. Gunasekhar has taken a story which is still quite relevant in today’s era and has showcased that Shakuntalam was actually a woman who went against the society in that period of time when no one dared to bat an eye against the societal customs and rituals.

Samantha is as graceful as they come. She is a beauty to behold in the character of Shakuntalam. Her acting is on the point and you will fall in love with her portrayal of the woman who showcases that love is above everything else. In the end, what matters is that you have someone who can be with you even when the entire world is against you.

Dev Mohan is also fantastic as the noble prince Dushyanta. He aces the character and looks at ease all the time. You may feel like that this is the character that he was born to play. It’s almost impossible to imagine someone else playing the role of Dushyanta after seeing Dev Mohan at work in this film. A complete masterclass from him.

What caused a bit disappointed was the background music. It was just average in my opinion and could have been a lot better. Mani Sharma could not provide those touches which could have taken a certain scenes to the next level.

All in all, Shakuntalam is a fine film to watch and if you are a fan of Samantha you definitely cannot miss this one.
