Karwa Chauth is being celebrated today, Thursday, October 29, and the one question on every fasting woman’s mind is: aaj chand kitne baje niklega? Married women across North India keep a nirjala fast from sunrise and break it only after seeing the moon and offering arghya, so the exact moonrise time in their city matters more than anything else today.
In Delhi, the moon is expected to rise at 8:17 PM. Moonrise will be earliest in the northeast, around 7:12 PM in Itanagar, and latest in the southwest, around 9:22 PM in Kavaratti. Here is the complete state-wise and city-wise Karwa Chauth moonrise time for today.

Why the Moon May Appear Later Than the Listed Time
The moonrise time is when the moon crosses the horizon. In most cities, it becomes visible only a few minutes later, once it rises above buildings, trees and haze. In hilly areas like Shimla, Srinagar, Gangtok and Leh, mountains can hide the moon for longer. Cloud cover or pollution can also delay the sighting. If the moon is not visible due to clouds, some families follow the tradition of breaking the fast at the listed moonrise time after offering arghya facing the direction of the moon.
How to Break the Karwa Chauth Fast
Once the moon is visible, offer arghya (water) to the moon from the karwa.
Look at the moon through a sieve (channi), and then at the husband’s face through the same sieve.
Pray for the husband’s long life and well-being.
The husband then offers the first sip of water and the first bite of food to end the fast.
Note: Moonrise times for Delhi NCR, Lucknow, Jaipur, Chandigarh, Mumbai, Pune, Kolkata, Patna, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai, Bhopal, Indore, Ahmedabad, Nagpur, Raipur, Varanasi and Ranchi are as per Drik Panchang. Timings for other cities are calculated for the city centre on the same basis and may vary by 1 to 2 minutes. Actual visibility may be later due to local terrain and weather.
