The Runner Release Date on Amazon Prime Video: Everything You Need to Know

If you enjoy action thrillers that keep the pressure cranked up from start to finish, The Runner is one to keep on your radar. This upcoming British thriller puts Gal Gadot in a very different kind of role, stepping out of the superhero world for a tense, deeply personal fight for survival.

Directed by Kevin Macdonald, The Runner follows a successful London lawyer whose ordinary morning turns into a nightmare when she discovers her young son has been kidnapped. From there, she is forced to follow a series of dangerous instructions from a mysterious caller.

The movie is set to arrive on Amazon Prime Video on September 2, 2026. With a strong cast, a London setting, and a simple but genuinely tense premise, this film could be a great pick for thriller fans looking for something new.

When Will The Runner Release on Amazon Prime Video?

The Runner premieres on Amazon Prime Video on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, releasing as a Prime Video title so subscribers can watch the thriller from home.

The film has a reported runtime of around 84 minutes, making it relatively short compared to a lot of modern action films. That could actually work in its favour, especially if the story keeps moving without wasting time on unnecessary subplots.

Amazon MGM Studios developed the film, with Kevin Macdonald directing. Production began in London in April 2025 and wrapped around July of the same year.

    What Is The Runner About?

The story follows Maia Marten, a successful London-based attorney played by Gal Gadot. Maia seems to have a busy but genuinely successful life, balancing a demanding career with her responsibilities as a mother.

Everything changes when her son is abducted.

Maia receives instructions from a mysterious person known only as the Caller, who tells her exactly what she needs to do if she wants to see her son again. The biggest problem is that she cannot simply ask for help or walk away.

Instead, Maia has to keep moving through London, completing a series of genuinely dangerous tasks. Every decision brings her closer to her son, but also puts her own life further at risk.

Things get even harder when Maia is eventually pushed toward an impossible moral choice involving one of her own clients, adding another layer to the story beyond the usual chase thriller.

Gal Gadot Takes on a Different Kind of Role

Gal Gadot is best known internationally for playing Wonder Woman, but The Runner hands her a much more grounded character to work with.

Maia is not a superhero. She has no special powers, no advanced technology, no team of experts backing her up. She is simply a mother desperate to get her child back.

That difference could turn out to be one of the most interesting parts of the film. Gadot has to carry a lot of the movie through physical action, along with fear, confusion, and real emotional pressure.

Her character is also described as intelligent and resourceful, which fits given her career as a high-powered lawyer. But knowing how to handle a courtroom is a completely different skill from surviving a dangerous chase across London.

Damian Lewis Plays the Mysterious Caller

Damian Lewis takes on the role of the Caller, the mysterious voice controlling Maia’s every move.

This character seems to be one of the central mysteries of the movie. Rather than being physically present throughout the story, the Caller controls Maia purely through a phone and a stream of instructions.

That creates a genuinely interesting cat-and-mouse dynamic. Maia needs to figure out who is actually behind the kidnapping while doing everything she can to protect her son at the same time.

Lewis fits well into a role that calls for a calm but genuinely threatening presence. His character’s real motives, and his connection to Maia, look set to be important pieces of the mystery.

Alfred Enoch Also Stars in The Runner

The cast also includes Alfred Enoch, joining Gadot and Lewis in this thriller.

Enoch has built a solid reputation through projects like How to Get Away with Murder and Foundation. His involvement adds another familiar face to the cast, though specifics about his character have stayed fairly under wraps.

The supporting cast also includes several other actors, including Kenton Lloyd Morgan, Pierre Bergman, Ruby Valentino, and Stevie Binns.

    Kevin Macdonald Directs the Thriller

The Runner is directed by Kevin Macdonald, a filmmaker known for working across thrillers, dramas, and real-life stories.

His previous work includes The Last King of Scotland and One Day in September. His experience with realistic, tense storytelling makes him a genuinely interesting choice for a movie built around a race against time.

The film also aims to give its chase sequences a more realistic feel. Much of the story plays out on the actual streets of London, making the city a real part of the movie rather than just a background location.

London Becomes Part of the Chase

One of the biggest draws of The Runner is its setting.

Rather than placing Maia in a fictional city or leaning entirely on large action sets, the movie uses London itself as the stage for her desperate journey. Streets, public spaces, and familiar parts of the city all become part of the chase.

This approach can make the story feel a lot closer to reality. Maia is not escaping through some imaginary action-movie world. She is trying to complete impossible tasks while moving through a busy city where ordinary people are simply going about their day.

That contrast between an ordinary London morning and Maia’s private crisis could make some of the movie’s scenes hit especially hard.

A Simple Story With High Stakes

The basic idea behind The Runner is easy to grasp. A mother has to save her kidnapped son while following orders from a total stranger.

What makes the story interesting is the pressure Maia is under.

She has very little time to think, and she cannot even be sure whether the person giving her instructions is telling the truth. At the same time, every mistake could carry serious consequences for her son.

So the movie blends physical action with genuine psychological tension. Maia has to run, think, and make impossibly hard decisions while the clock keeps ticking.

What Makes The Runner Worth Watching?

The biggest reason to watch The Runner is really the combination of Gal Gadot and Kevin Macdonald.

Gadot gets to lead a thriller without leaning on the larger-than-life image tied to Wonder Woman. Macdonald, meanwhile, brings real experience crafting tense stories with a grounded, realistic feel.

The short runtime could also make this an easy weekend watch. At around 84 minutes, The Runner does not need to be a sprawling action epic to work. If the pacing holds up, the film could deliver a genuinely compact, intense thriller experience.

The mystery around the Caller is another good reason to watch. Finding out why Maia has been targeted, and what the kidnapper actually wants, should carry a lot of the movie’s suspense.
