Dark Matter Season 2 Release Date - When and Where to Watch the New Episodes

Fans of Dark Matter do not have long to wait for the next chapter. This popular Apple TV+ sci-fi series returns for Season 2 on Friday, August 28, 2026.

The new season arrives more than two years after the first one wrapped up. Joel Edgerton and Jennifer Connelly return as Jason and Daniela Dessen as their family once again gets swept into a dangerous world of alternate realities.

Unlike Season 1, which kicked off with two episodes at once, Season 2 starts with just one episode. After that, Apple TV+ will drop a new episode every Friday.

This 10-episode season runs through until October 30, 2026, when the finale drops.

Where to Watch Dark Matter Season 2

Dark Matter is an Apple TV+ original series, so Season 2 will be available exclusively on Apple TV+.

You will need an active Apple TV+ subscription to watch the new episodes, which can be accessed through Apple devices, smart TVs, streaming devices, gaming consoles, and the web.

The first season is also available on the platform, giving new viewers a chance to catch up on Jason’s story before diving into Season 2.

Eligible new subscribers may also be able to use Apple’s free trial offer, depending on where they are located and their current eligibility.

    Episode 8October 16, 2026
    Episode 9October 23, 2026
    Episode 10October 30, 2026

This weekly release schedule should give fans plenty of time to dig into the twists and mysteries between episodes.

What Is Dark Matter Season 2 About?

The first season introduced viewers to Jason Dessen, a physicist, professor, and family man whose life gets turned upside down after he is kidnapped and pulled into an alternate reality.

Jason then stumbles onto a mysterious box that lets people move between different versions of reality. What starts out as an incredible discovery quickly turns into a genuinely frightening struggle as he tries to find his way back to the life and family he knows.

Season 2 picks up after those events. Jason, Daniela, and their son Charlie are trying to build a peaceful life in a reality that seems safe enough. But that hope for a normal life does not last long.

Jason’s growing obsession with the mysterious Box creates fresh problems, while Daniela grows increasingly worried about the dangers still surrounding their family.

Elsewhere, Amanda and Ryan team up as they try to find their way home. Leighton keeps chasing his own idea of a perfect world, while Blair is determined to stop him at any cost.

So this new season ends up expanding well beyond Jason’s personal journey, following several characters as they move through different realities of their own.

Dark Matter Season 2 Is an Original Story

One of the more interesting things about Season 2 is that it moves beyond Blake Crouch’s original novel.

Season 1 was based on Crouch’s bestselling 2016 book Dark Matter. Since that novel’s story was largely covered in the first season, there is no existing sequel book for the TV series to draw from.

Instead, Season 2 is an original continuation written for television by Blake Crouch himself.

That means even readers already familiar with the original book will not know exactly what is coming next. This new season gives Crouch a lot more room to dig into the characters and the many realities introduced back in Season 1.

    Dark Matter Season 2 Cast

Several key members of the original cast are back for the new season.

Joel Edgerton returns as Jason Dessen, while Jennifer Connelly reprises her role as Daniela Dessen. Oakes Fegley is back as their son Charlie.

    The returning cast also includes:

    • Alice Braga as Amanda Lucas
    • Jimmi Simpson as Ryan Holder
    • Dayo Okeniyi as Leighton Vance
    • Amanda Brugel as Blair Caplan

The new season also brings in Chris Diamantopoulos in a recurring role.

Amanda Brugel, who had a recurring role in Season 1, has been bumped up to a series regular for Season 2.

Three Different Stories Across the Multiverse

Season 2 seems to be taking a much wider approach to its multiverse concept.

Rather than focusing mainly on Jason’s attempt to get back home, the story follows different groups as they each deal with their own problems across alternate worlds.

Jason and his family are trying to protect their new life. Amanda and Ryan are searching for a way home, while Blair gets pulled into a separate conflict tied to Leighton’s plans.

This wider story could let the series show off even more versions of the worlds introduced in Season 1.

It also means the consequences of the first season are not limited to just Jason and Daniela anymore. The choices made by different versions of these characters could ripple out with much bigger effects across the entire multiverse.

What Can Fans Expect From Season 2?

This second season promises more mystery, science fiction, and emotional drama. Season 1 leaned heavily into the question of what might happen if someone could actually see all the lives they could have lived.

Season 2 pushes that idea even further.

Jason’s relationship with the Box stays important, but the story also digs into the dangers that come with having access to countless realities. With multiple versions of characters existing across different worlds, it gets genuinely hard to know who can be trusted.

This new season also looks set to be more ambitious in how it explores the multiverse, with new worlds, difficult choices, and plenty of surprises waiting for fans.

Dark Matter Season 2 Has a Bigger Story to Tell

The decision to continue Dark Matter came down to the success of the first season and the creative plans Blake Crouch and his team had lined up.

Rather than just stretching the story out without a real ending in sight, the creators have talked about a larger three-season plan. That gives Season 2 an important role in setting up the next stage of the overall story.

Crouch has also pointed out that television gives him a lot more room than a single novel to explore these characters and where their journeys take them.

That could make Season 2 especially interesting for viewers who loved the first season but wanted to see even more of this multiverse.

Dark Matter Season 2 Release: Everything to Know

Dark Matter Season 2 premieres on August 28, 2026, on Apple TV+, running for 10 episodes, with a new one dropping every Friday until the finale on October 30. Joel Edgerton, Jennifer Connelly, Alice Braga, Jimmi Simpson, Dayo Okeniyi, Oakes Fegley, and Amanda Brugel are among the returning cast, with Chris Diamantopoulos joining the ensemble this time around.

Most importantly, Season 2 tells a brand new story beyond Blake Crouch’s original novel, with the author himself continuing to lead the series. For anyone who loves parallel worlds, complicated characters, and big sci-fi mysteries, this new season looks set to take Dark Matter into a much bigger universe than before.
