What Happened and Where the Story Picks Up

JJ is dead. Played by Rudy Pankow throughout the entire run of the show, JJ was the heartbeat of the Pogue crew — chaotic, loyal, irreplaceable. Stranded in Europe and mourning their best friend, they’re chasing Chandler Groff — now elevated to series regular, played by J. Anthony Crane — who is still at large after everything that happened in Morocco. The mission is to track him across Portugal and Croatia, reclaim the Blue Crown, and make him answer for what he did to JJ.
But it’s not a straightforward chase. Dalia and the Corsairs are closing in. The Kooks back home are working to ensure the Pogues have nowhere to return to. And the crew is held together by grief and rage — not always the most stable foundation for a plan.
There’s also another layer of stakes that makes this finale feel particularly heavy. Sarah and John B are expecting a child. They’re not just fighting for themselves or their friendship anymore — they’re fighting for the family they’re about to start, which makes every risk they take feel that much more weighted.

Why This Is the End
The show was renewed for a fifth and final season in November 2024, and at the time the creators were clear that this was always the plan.
In their letter to fans, Josh Pate, Jonas Pate, and Shannon Burke described how the show began from a single photograph — teenagers on a beach at dusk during a power outage — and grew into a story they always imagined lasting five seasons. “We imagined a mystery that would lead to a five-season journey of adventure, treasure hunting, and friendship,” they wrote.
Josh Pate also confirmed something that has been true since the very beginning — the creative team has known exactly how the show ends since they started making it. “We’ve always known from the beginning what the last scene would be,” he said.
That final scene is now almost here.
