Sholay Movie Budget, Cast Salary and Box Office Collection

Sholay is re-releasing in India in December 2025. The most popular movie of all time of Bollywood, Sholay has left a huge legacy on Indian cinema. It was originally released in 1975 but did not find many viewers during its initial days at the theatre. However, the word-of-mouth soon caught up with the viewers and it ran successfully for more than five years at the theatres. Some may consider this as one of the greatest Bollywood movie ever made.

    Sholay Movie Budget

At the time of its release, Sholay was one of the most expensive Hindi films ever made. In the 1970s, the film had a production budget of around ₹3 crore, which was considered massive for that era. A significant portion of the budget went into large-scale action scenes, grand sets, and the famous shooting location of Ramnagar in Karnataka.

    Sholay Movie Cast Salary

Sholay featured some of the biggest stars of its time—Amitabh Bachchan, Dharmendra, Hema Malini, Jaya Bhaduri, Sanjeev Kumar, and Amjad Khan. Each actor was paid based on their popularity during the 1970s.

Although Sholay received mixed reviews during its initial days, it quickly gained momentum and went on to become the biggest blockbuster of its time.

    • India Gross Collection (1975): Around ₹15 crore
    • Re-releases in the 1980s: ₹20+ crore
    • Inflation-adjusted value (today): Over ₹400 crore
    • Remarkable Run: The film played continuously for nearly 5 years in some theatres

The movie not only achieved extraordinary commercial success but also became a timeless part of Indian pop culture. Gabbar Singh’s dialogues and the iconic friendship of Jai–Veeru continue to be celebrated even today.

    Conclusion

Sholay is not just a film—it is an unforgettable cinematic milestone that changed the direction of Bollywood. From its ambitious budget to the cast salaries and historic box office run, every aspect of the movie contributed to its status as a legendary classic. Even after almost five decades, Sholay remains a golden chapter in Indian cinema.
