    Lokah Chapter 1 Chandra Review

Malayalam cinema takes a giant leap into the superhero genre with “Lokah Chapter 1: Chandra,” and the result is both ambitious and refreshing. Director Dominic Arun has crafted something truly special here – a film that dares to dream big while staying rooted in compelling storytelling.

    Breaking New Ground

This isn’t just another superhero movie. Kalyani Priyadarshan plays Chandra, the first female superhero of Malayalam cinema, and that alone makes this film historically significant. Set as the first installment in the planned Wayfarer Cinematic Universe, the film is produced by Dulquer Salmaan under his banner Wayfarer Films, showing the serious commitment behind this project.

The story follows a young woman who discovers supernatural abilities while facing personal challenges. As evil emerges, she must accept her powers and destiny in a transforming world. What could have been a predictable origin story becomes something more nuanced and emotionally engaging.

    Stellar Performances

Kalyani Priyadarshan completely transforms herself for this role. She takes the leap from relatable girl-next-door roles into a larger-than-life action hero, and the transition feels natural rather than forced. Her portrayal of Chandra brings both vulnerability and strength to the screen, making you believe in her journey from ordinary person to superhero.

Naslen continues his impressive streak after Premalu, bringing his natural charm and energy to the role. The Premalu breakout star plays a pivotal role and proves he can handle both comedy and drama with equal skill. His chemistry with Kalyani adds heart to the spectacular action sequences.

The supporting cast, including Arun Kurian, Chandu Salimkumar, and veteran actors like Vijayaraghavan, provides solid backing to the lead performers. Everyone seems invested in creating this new cinematic universe.

    Technical Excellence

The technical crew includes Nimish Ravi as the cinematographer, Chaman Chakko as the editor, and Jakes Bejoy for music. The visuals are stunning, bringing the fantasy elements to life without overwhelming the human story at the center.

Principal photography commenced with a muhurat pooja ceremony on 12 September 2024, and shooting was completed by 30 January 2025, lasting for 94 days. This extensive production schedule shows in the film’s polished finish and attention to detail.

The action sequences feel fresh and exciting, avoiding the typical superhero movie clichés. The fantasy elements blend seamlessly with the realistic character development, creating a world that feels both magical and believable.

    A Universe Begins

The film is mounted on a massive scale and marks the beginning of a new superhero cinematic universe titled ‘Lokah’. This ambition could have been overwhelming, but director Dominic Arun keeps the focus on character development and storytelling rather than just setting up future films.

As Kalyani Priyadarshan notes, “You need to appreciate that we have people like Dulquer backing such a film. Not only is it very different; it also takes a lot of courage”, and this courage shows in every frame.

    What Makes It Special

The film succeeds because it doesn’t try to copy Western superhero movies. Instead, it creates something uniquely Malayalam while embracing the superhero genre’s potential for spectacle and emotion. The blend of fantasy, action, and human drama feels organic rather than forced.

The film has cleared censorship with a U/A certificate, making it accessible to families while maintaining its thrilling edge.

    Final Verdict

“Lokah Chapter 1: Chandra” is a game-changer for Malayalam cinema. It proves that regional cinema can create world-class superhero content while maintaining its unique identity.

This is more than just entertainment – it’s a statement about the ambitions and capabilities of Malayalam cinema. Whether you’re a superhero fan or not, this film deserves your attention.
