Air India Nowhere in Sight: These Are the World’s Top 10 Safest Airlines

Following the crash of Air India flight AI171 on June 12 in Ahmedabad, concerns over flight safety have intensified worldwide. Amid this backdrop, AirlineRatings.com has released its list of the world’s safest airlines for 2025, covering both full-service and low-cost carriers.

What Is This Ranking Based On?

The list assessed 385 airlines based on several factors, including:

    • Crash or serious incident records over the past two years
    • Pilot training standards
    • Age and size of aircraft fleets
    • Profitability
    • International safety certifications like IOSA and ICAO

    Top 10 Safest Full-Service Airlines (2025)

    1. Air New Zealand
    2. Qantas
    3. Cathay Pacific
    4. Qatar Airways
    5. Emirates
    6. Virgin Australia
    7. Etihad Airways
    8. ANA (All Nippon Airways)
    9. EVA Air
    10. Korean Air

Major airlines like British Airways, Lufthansa, Japan Airlines (JAL), and Air Canada also feature in the top 25.

Indian Presence Among Safest Low-Cost Airlines

In the low-cost category, India’s IndiGo and AirAsia India have made it to the top list, alongside global names like Ryanair, easyJet, JetBlue, and Southwest.

Which Is the Safest Airline in India?

Airline safety in India has been under the spotlight this year. According to the 2025 safety ratings by AirlineRatings.com:

    • SpiceJet has been rated India’s safest airline with a perfect 7 out of 7 stars.
    • IndiGo and Akasa Air followed with strong scores of 6 out of 7 stars.

However, Air India received only 4 stars, while its low-cost subsidiary Air India Express was rated just 2 stars. The crash of AI171 has severely impacted the airline’s standing, and it was not included in the global safety list this year.

Why Is This a Matter of Concern?

While several Indian low-cost airlines are gaining global recognition for their safety, the country’s oldest and most prominent carrier, Air India, lags behind. This shows a pressing need for major reforms in safety standards.

These statistics clearly indicate that while some Indian airlines have performed impressively on the safety front, Air India has significant ground to cover to restore trust and regain its standing.
