USA Sanctions 400 Entities, Including Many in India, for Tech Supply to Russia

The U.S. has imposed sanctions on nearly 400 entities and individuals from over a dozen countries, including India, accusing them of supplying advanced technology to Russia to support its military efforts in Ukraine. This action, carried out by the Treasury and State Departments, represents the most significant effort to date against third-party evasion of sanctions imposed on Russia. It includes sanctions against numerous companies from India, China, and Hong Kong, marking the largest coordinated action against entities from these countries so far.

Targets of the sanctions also include entities in Russia, the UAE, Turkey, Thailand, Malaysia, and Switzerland. Deputy Treasury Secretary Wally Adeyemo stated, “The U.S. and our allies will continue to take decisive action to stop the flow of critical tools and technologies that Russia needs to wage its illegal and immoral war against Ukraine.”

The Treasury Department imposed sanctions on 274 entities, while the State Department designated over 120 and the Commerce Department added 40 companies and research institutions to a trade restriction list for their alleged support of the Russian military. The U.S. has consistently warned against supplying Russia with Common High Priority Items—advanced components, including microelectronics, that the U.S. and European Union believe are likely to be used in the conflict.

A State Department official noted a rise in exports of such goods from India to Russia and expressed an increased interest in addressing companies facilitating these activities. The sanctions serve as a warning that the U.S. will take action against Indian firms if there is insufficient progress in communication. The official emphasized that the U.S. has been straightforward about its concerns regarding emerging trends in India that it aims to curb before they escalate. Among the firms targeted is India-based Futrevo, which is suspected of involvement in supplying high-priority items to a Russia-based manufacturer of Orlan drones.
