Skiplagging: What You Need to Know About This Controversial Travel Hack

Skiplagging: What You Need to Know About This Controversial Travel Hack

Skiplagging, also known as hidden city ticketing, is a travel hack where passengers book a multi-city flight but disembark at the layover city, skipping the final destination to save money. For instance, you might book a flight from Delhi to Bengaluru with a layover in Pune, but instead of continuing to Bengaluru, you get off in Pune. This can be cheaper than booking a direct flight from Delhi to Pune. This strategy has become popular in the United States and other regions. “Skiplagging has gained traction because it can result in significant savings, but it comes with its challenges,” says travel advisor Deep Kumar. Although this practice can be cost-effective, it’s crucial to be aware of the associated risks.

    Benefits and Risks of Skiplagging

While skiplagging can lead to considerable airfare savings, it also carries notable risks. Airlines generally disapprove of this practice and may cancel future flights or revoke frequent flyer benefits if you’re caught. Additionally, schedule changes can disrupt your plans, potentially leaving you stranded. “Although skiplagging might be appealing, the potential baggage issues and airline restrictions make it a risky choice. Opting for a direct flight is often more reliable and less stressful,” advises travel content creator Shenaz Treasurywala. Moreover, frequent skiplaggers could face legal consequences, as airlines are increasingly cracking down on this tactic, using advanced technology to detect and penalize offenders.

    What Are the Alternatives?

Given the risks of skiplagging, travelers looking to save on airfare might explore these alternative strategies:

    • Booking Flexibility: Being flexible with your travel dates and times can often lead to lower fares.
    • Airport Choice: Consider flying into smaller, less popular airports for potential savings.
    • Travel Rewards: Using airline miles or credit card points can significantly reduce flight costs.
    • Incognito Browsing: Some travelers believe that booking flights in incognito mode can prevent airlines from raising prices based on search history. Additionally, exploring budget airlines or promotional offers can provide cost-effective options without the risks associated with skiplagging.
