Never Make These 7 Mistakes During a Heatstroke – They Can Worsen Your Condition Instead of Helping

Rising temperatures can cause health issues for both children and adults. One of the most common dangers during the summer is heatstroke. While many people know how to prevent heatstroke, few are aware of the mistakes they should avoid if someone does suffer from it. Making these errors can worsen the condition instead of helping. Here’s what you must not do if someone has a heatstroke:

Mistakes to Avoid During a Heatstroke

    1. Ignoring the Symptoms

Many people make the mistake of ignoring symptoms like dizziness, severe headache, vomiting, or fainting. These are common signs of heatstroke and should not be taken lightly. If such symptoms appear, seek medical help immediately.

    2. Staying in the Heat

Some people continue spending time in direct sunlight or hot environments even after showing signs of heatstroke. This is dangerous. The person should be moved immediately to a shaded or air-conditioned place to cool down.

    3. Not Drinking Enough Water or Choosing the Wrong Drinks

Avoid beverages like alcohol, coffee, or sodas during a heatstroke. These can worsen dehydration. Instead, give the patient cold water or an ORS (oral rehydration solution) slowly and steadily.

    4. Taking the Wrong Medication

People often take aspirin or paracetamol to reduce the fever caused by heatstroke, but this can be harmful. These medicines may not be suitable in such cases. Always consult a doctor before taking any medication for heatstroke.

    5. Not Lowering Body Temperature

One of the first things to do during a heatstroke is to reduce the body temperature. Use a damp cloth to wipe the body, turn on a fan or AC, or give the person a cool bath. However, do not apply ice directly to the skin.

    6. Wearing Heavy or Tight Clothes

Tight or heavy clothing can trap heat and make the condition worse. Make sure the person wears loose, lightweight clothes to help the body cool down faster.

    7. Delaying Medical Help

Relying solely on home remedies and avoiding medical help even in serious conditions like unconsciousness or high fever (above 104°F) can be dangerous. If symptoms worsen or remain severe, go to the hospital immediately and consult a doctor.

By avoiding these common mistakes, you can manage heatstroke more effectively and ensure quicker recovery.
