Amid growing concerns over data privacy and potential misuse, government authorities have clarified recent speculations about the DigiYatra app. The Ministry of Civil Aviation has confirmed that passenger data collected through DigiYatra is not shared with tax authorities. “There is no sharing of DigiYatra passengers’ data with tax authorities.”
The ministry explained that DigiYatra uses a Self-Sovereign Identity (SSI) model, ensuring that all Personally Identifiable Information (PII) and travel data are stored exclusively on the user’s device. No central repository is maintained. Additionally, if the app is uninstalled, all stored data is permanently deleted.
The ministry further clarified that airport systems automatically delete passenger data within 24 hours of a flight’s departure.
The Income Tax Department also denied the claims, stating on X:
“There is no move by @IncomeTaxIndia to use DigiYatra data for cracking down on tax evaders.”
DigiYatra Foundation CEO Suresh Khadakbhavi called the allegations “unfounded claims based on unknown sources.” He emphasized that DigiYatra operates without storing PII in any central database, ensuring data security and privacy.
