Recently, several media reports claimed that the FASTag system would be discontinued from May 1, 2025, and a satellite-based toll collection system would replace it. These reports quickly spread across social media, creating confusion and concern, especially among daily highway and expressway commuters.
Transport Ministry Clarifies
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has completely rejected these reports, calling them false and misleading. In an official statement, the ministry clarified that no such decision has been made to replace the FASTag system with a satellite-based tolling system from May 1, 2025. This means the FASTag system will continue as usual.
How Did This News Go Viral?
The confusion likely arose from the government’s plan to explore and test new tolling technologies in the near future. One such technology under testing is the ANPR-FASTag based barrier-less tolling system.
What is ANPR Technology?
ANPR stands for Automatic Number Plate Recognition, a technology that can read vehicle number plates automatically. This system will be integrated with the existing FASTag setup. Once implemented, vehicles won’t need to stop at toll plazas.
Where Will This New System Be Installed?
The government has invited tenders to install this system at select toll plazas on a trial basis. After evaluating its performance and public response, a decision will be made on whether to implement it nationwide. If a driver tries to evade toll payments, they may receive an e-notice, and their FASTag could be blocked.
Benefits of the New System
- Seamless toll collection and reduced travel time
- Improved traffic flow and reduced congestion
- A smoother and more comfortable experience for drivers with minimal stoppage
